Elden Ring DLC Build Guide: The "Waves of Darkness" Mage

Today, we're diving into a build that is pure, unadulterated aggression. We're talking about a setup focused entirely on maximizing the damage of the Waves of Darkness Ash of War. This has always been one of my favorite Ashes for invasions, and on an Intelligence build, it becomes an absolute nuke. If you want to replicate this setup, don’t forget to buy Elden Ring Runes to level up quickly. Perfect for shutting down overly aggressive teams who think they can just rush you down.

Why This Build Works

Waves of Darkness is the ultimate "get off me" tool that doubles as a primary damage dealer. The magic waves get a massive boost from your Intelligence stat, allowing you to deal devastating area-of-effect damage. The key strengths are:

· Hyper Armor: You become a rock during the casting animation. You will trade with your enemies, and you will win that trade.

· The Combo: The Ash of War can be followed up with a heavy attack. If you land the initial slam and the follow-up, you can easily one-shot most players.

· Anti-Gank Potential: This setup is specifically designed to run headfirst into teams of three and come out on top.

Stats & Equipment

The stat spread is straightforward. You want the minimum Strength and Dexterity required to wield your weapon of choice, then pour everything else into Intelligence.

Weapon of Choice:

For this build, I'm using a Cold-infused Greatsword (the colossal sword) with the Waves of Darkness Ash of War. The Cold infusion gives you both high magic damage and the Frostbite status effect, adding even more burst potential. The moveset is fantastic for mix-ups, especially the crouch poke.

Talisman Setup:

We're stacking damage multipliers to make the Ash of War hit as hard as possible.

1. Shard of Alexander: The cornerstone of any Ash of War build. Boosts the damage of Waves of Darkness by a significant margin.

2. Two-Handed Sword Talisman: A must-have for any colossal sword user. Since you'll almost always be two-handing, you get a free 10% damage boost to all your attacks.

3. Magic Scorpion Charm: A risk/reward talisman that increases your magic damage (including the waves) at the cost of lowering your damage negation. Perfect for maximizing that burst.

4. Great-Jar's Arsenal: This lets us wear heavy armor while maintaining a medium roll, which is crucial for surviving trades and applying pressure.

Armor & Physick:

1. Armor: Go for the highest poise you can manage while staying at medium load. Poise is essential for guaranteeing your hyper armor trades. The Circlet of Light is a great helm option if you want one extra point of Intelligence.

2. Flask of Wondrous Physick: For maximum damage, mix the Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear (increases magic damage) with the Opaline Hardtear (reduces all damage taken). You can swap the defense tear for the Intelligence-Knot Crystal Tear if you really want to push the damage to its absolute limit.

Sorceries (The Honorable Wizard Package):

While we're primarily a melee mage, we have a few tricks up our sleeve:

1. Terra Magica: This is a game-changer. If a team is being overly aggressive and running straight at you, cast this on the ground. Standing in it will greatly enhance the damage of your waves. Lure them into your kill zone.

2. Eternal Darkness: Since I'm something of a wizard myself, this is my favorite anti-wizard tool. It draws in incoming sorceries, creating a safe zone against projectile spammers. It's the perfect counter to dishonest, star-spamming mages.

Invasion Highlights & Tactical Breakdown

Alright, enough theory. Let's get into the invasions and see this build in action.

Haligtree Mayhem

We spawn in at the Haligtree, and it looks like the squad is right at the start. They don't even have the elevator active. A Phantom with Rivers of Blood tries to trade with me. Big mistake.

· The Trade: I bait him into a direct confrontation. As he attacks, I start my Waves of Darkness. The hyper armor kicks in, I tank his hit, and the slam connects. 1,800 damage. One wave missed, and it still nearly killed him.

· The Lesson: High Intelligence turns this Ash of War from a strong tool into a tactical warhead. Don't be afraid to trade. You will almost always come out on top.

Albinauric Village: The Dishonest Wizard

We run into a classic: a host, his overleveled phantom, and a wizard spamming Stars of Ruin. This is where Eternal Darkness shines.

· The Setup: I cast Eternal Darkness to counter the wizard's spam. While it works, it doesn't catch everything. A Comet still slips through.

· The Solution: When magic spam gets too dishonest, you have to get creative. I pull out some hefty magic pots. The tracking on them is brutal. The wizard, whose name was fittingly "Unworthy," learns that being a one-trick pony doesn't work against a build with this much utility.

The Shadow Keep: The Ladder Play

One of my favorite moments. The host is at the bottom of a ladder, and the Phantom is waiting at the top.

· The Ambush: I wait for the Phantom to start climbing down, then cast Waves of Darkness from the top. The shockwave travels down the ladder and hits him for massive damage.

· The Follow-Up: The host tries to come up. I cast the Ash of War again, and he panic-rolls right into the follow-up heavy attack.

· The Lesson: Waves of Darkness isn't just for open fields. Use the environment. Narrow corridors, doorways, and ladders are where this Ash of War truly excels at trapping opponents.

The Lake of Rot: Taunter's Tongue Trouble

· We run into a group using the Taunter's Tongue in the Lake of Rot. A red phantom tries to spam the Blind Spot ash of war on me.

· The Counter: This is a perfect example of the build's hyper armor. The red thinks he's going to dance around me. I simply tank his attack and unleash Waves of Darkness. The damage is so high it forces him to roll straight into the Scarlet Rot lake. One more wave, and he's done.

The Cliffside Cannon Duel

In the Shadow Keep's water area, we encounter a squad with a cannon. They're trying to set up an ambush, but it turns into a long-range duel.

· The Approach: I use the environment for cover, tossing magic pots and using the Ash of War's shockwave to harass them from a distance.

· The Climax: The cannon user gets overconfident. I close the distance, and we go for a final trade. My Waves of Darkness comes out just as he fires. I take the hit, but the three waves of magic pulverize him. It's a testament to the build's sheer damage output.

Final Thoughts & Build Summary

Well, that wraps up all the battles I have for you guys for today. Honestly, this is a very powerful setup. It does a ton of burst damage, and the mix-up potential with the colossal sword moveset is just chef's kiss. If you're tired of running away from gank squads, try this build. Put on your heaviest armor, two-hand that colossal sword, and run straight into the blender. You are the blender.
